Academic Objectives & Requirements

 1. Objectives
Cultivate positive world view and personal values; love the motherland; keep good moral character; seek truth from facts and have a rigorous academic attitude; have good professional ethics; have a wide range of knowledge in Chinese and foreign history, culture, literature, language literacy and a broader academic vision, with sound interdisciplinary research ability; proficiency in the target language and Chinese. Know the target-language country well in the field of humanities, especially with basic theoretical knowledge in the fields of literature, linguistics, and culture; understand the recent academic developments of the target language countries in these fields, and gain familiarity with the political, economic, cultural, historical backgrounds of the target-language countries. Develop a specific research direction; develop preliminary research plans in the field of study; employ suitable research methods; adapt to the needs of human progress and social development; master a solid and broad basic theory of the discipline; and acquire an understanding of new directions in the discipline and in academic research in general.

 2. Requirements.
    A. Personal Qualities:
    Strictly act in accordance with the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, pursue an honest and prudent learning attitude, maintain academic morality, a spirit of social responsibility and teamwork, and be in good health.
    B. Knowledge:
    Have a solid foundation of foreign language, literature and professional knowledge; understand the current situation and development trends of the discipline; be familiar with the classic literature and existing research results in related fields. Have a broad interdisciplinary perspective. PhD students engaged in linguistic studies should have basic knowledge in the fields of language history, language philosophy, general linguistics, logic, anthropology, and sociology; PhD students engaged in foreign literature studies should have literary, philosophical, aesthetic, historical, anthropologic, and psychological academic knowledge. PhD students engaged in translation, national/regional studies, and cross-cultural studies should have basic knowledge in language, literature, philosophy, history, law, economics, culture, psychology, sociology, and political science.
 3. Abilities
Proficient in knowledge acquisition, academic appreciation, academic research, innovation and communication. Proficient in Chinese writing; proficient in a foreign working language and have high-level of motivation. Fluent in a second foreign language (English, French, German, Russian, etc.) and able to read foreign language materials. Able to communicate academically in oral and written form.



    3. Basic ability:

    Have the ability in acquiring knowledge, academic identification, research, academic innovation and academic communication. Must have a strong level of Chinese writing, be proficient in a working foreign language, have the ability to apply the language at a high level, and have a good grasp of a second foreign language (e.g. English, French, German, Russian, French). The student must be able to read foreign language materials of this major skillfully, and have the ability to express academic expertise in oral or written form.

Academic Reports

Each 4-year PhD student is required to produce a written report or hold a seminar 6 times during each academic year, from which at least one or two must be delivered to the academic forum of the subject or college. Completion of 6 counts as 2 credits. Each 5-year PhD student is required to produce a written report or hold seminar 10 times during each academic year, from which at least 4 must be delivered to the academic forum of the subject or college. Completion of 10 counts as 4 credits. The number of written reports for master-doctor students is the same as that of 5-year PhD students: the four written reports that have been completed in the master's degree can also be counted towards doctoral requirements.

Thesis Proposals

Deadlines for thesis proposals are as follows. 4-year PhD students: by the end of the Summer Semester of the second year (June); for 5-year PhD students: by the end of the Winter Semester of the fourth year (December); for master-doctor students: by the end of the Winter Semester of the second year (December), i.e. 1.5 years before graduation.

Interim Assessment

I. Assessment target: full-time PhD students (including full-time international students).
II. Assessment date:
 1) 4-year PhD students and master-doctor students: by the beginning of the second year (September)
 2) 5-year PhD students: by the beginning of the third year (September).
III. Assessment methods: The interim assessment of PhD students consists of two parts, examination results and evaluation of research ability. Examination results include all major mandatory courses and at least three selective courses. The average score accounts for 30% of comprehensive assessment results. The research capacity assessment accounts for 70% of comprehensive assessment results, and includes research progress, academic research projects, results and awards, and academic communications.

Pre-review

The master-doctor's thesis adopts a one-month pre-review system. Those applying for a degree in spring shall submit the draft for review before December 20 of the previous year; those applying for their degree in summer shall submit the draft before March 20 of the same year; those applying for their degree in the winter shall submit their draft by September 20.

Graduation & Diploma Requirements

1. Complete the required courses and meet the minimum credit requirements for the program. For 4-year PhD students, the minimum total credits is 14, including 2 for public courses and 10 for major courses or interdisciplinary courses (at least 4 for mandatory major courses), and 2 for academic reports. For 5-year PhD students and master-doctor students, the minimum total credits is 34, including 5 for public courses, 1 for quality courses, 16 for major courses (12 in masters and 4 in doctoral period), 8 for compulsory selective courses (at least 6 from major), and 4 for academic reports.
2. Complete all assessments and meet relevant requirements.
3. Successfully defend the dissertation.
4. Publication of academic papers: In accordance with the requirements for doctoral students applying for dissertations prescribed by the Academic Degrees Committee of the Ministry of Humanities, publish 2 or more academic papers related to the dissertation in core journals (1 authoritative journal is equivalent to two core journals). Foreign journals must be certified by the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Search Station (submit an online application through the school library website, which must be stamped by the school library).

Quality Guarantee Systems

The Quality Guarantee System consists of the Main Training Parts for Full-time Graduate Students, the Application, Anonymous Appraisal and Defense for Dissertation; Teaching and Management Rules of Graduate Students; and Dissertation Format for Doctor's Degree for School of International Studies, Zhejiang University

Notes:

1. PhD students of equivalent academic or interdisciplinary majors should generally take 2-3 masters courses as supplementary courses under the guidance of the instructors. Those who fail to pass the supplementary courses may not conduct the thesis proposal defense. Supplementary courses do not count towards minimum total credits.

2. For all PhD students (except Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreign students) after the Class of 2014 (including), social practice is included in the compulsory training. Summary:
