Abstract In the U.S., the backbones of world language education are the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (1999), known as the five Cs (communication, culture, connections, comparisons, communities), of which the Culture C is a crucial component. How do we link language teaching with culture and stimulate non-stereotypical understanding of “deep culture”? The Deep Approach concept proposes project-based, thematic units that inquire into intellectual, artistic, scientific, public, and political life and document it through video narratives, cases, interviews, and debates. Some of the videos supporting the units are drawn and adapted from TV programs or films; others are created specifically for this project.  This interdisciplinary project meets the purposes of international education programs to (a) develop a pool of international experts and meet national needs; (b) develop and validate specialized materials and techniques for foreign language acquisition and intercultural learning; and (c) advance the internationalization of a variety of disciplines throughout undergraduate and graduate education.

Abstract: Professor Tochon proposes an approach derived from research that reverse-engineered the spontaneous practices of experienced foreign language teachers. The concept complements and brings a response to the limitations of outcome-based curricula and educational standards. The deep learning process gives rise to a variety of outcomes that cannot always be fully anticipated. Therefore, deep evaluation is open and focuses on creative work. Deep content-based learning places the emphasis on the quality of the acquisition process and proficiency development within the accomplishment of projects.  The author offers a new perspective on ways of organizing classroom practice that are genuine to expert language teachers used to work in settings in which the proficiency levels in the target language may vary.
