Abstract:

Intercultural Communication in the USA began as language training for diplomats, gradually growing to include several quite different strands: Cross-cultural communication, International communication, and Development communication. This presentation will provide an overview of the early history, and then summarize the current state of affairs. A case study will document the cultural characteristics of intercultural communication, with suggestions made about how this applies to research in other cultural contexts, including applications to interdisciplinary dialogues. All three types of dialogues (intercultural, international and interdisciplinary) share multiple characteristics, which will be summarized for the conclusion.
