题  目Lady Macbeth’s Gender Stereotyping and Tragedy

Macbeth, as one of Shakespeare’s most enduringly popular and globally influential plays, has engendered various interpretations through ages. Many analysts see in the character of Lady Macbeth the conflict between femininity and masculinity, accusing her of her evilness, either as a witch or as an Anti-mother. However, with feminist criticism of Shakespeare as theatrical framework, this thesis aims to prove that in spite of Lady Macbeth’s appalling deeds, she is a typical woman in a patriarchal society, doing everything for her husband’s sake. Her abnormal deeds represent gender stereotyping. She is doomed to be a tragic character as a victim and failure to surpass the patriarchy.
Key Words: Lady Macbeth, gender stereotyping, tragedy, patriarchal society

Confucius in TIME---A Corpus-based Study of Confucius' Identity Construction in TIME Magazine

The study is initiated in a context where Confucius identity is intensively studied at home and aboard. In order to gain a panoramic view of how Confucius identity is constructed in TIME magazine, the paper investigates its report changes (1923-2006) with guidance of discoursal features suggested by Michael Halliday. And enlightened by Baker et al.(2008), this study collecting data from TIME corpus is actually “a synergy of discourse analysis and corpus-driven methodology”. Then, illuminated by empirical but critical question-driven data along with former researches in sight, an overall analysis is conducted on the basis of Foucaultian discourse construction theory, primarily based upon cluster, collocate and keyword functions in AntConc toolkit. Analysis leads Confucius identity to four categorizations (person, property, concept, and medium), where apart from the general knowledge about him, Confucius is not regarded in view of humanhood rather than a code with which main topics in TIME reports are pushed out. In other words, utilitarianism permeates TIME. For this matter, however, in Chinese Confucius identity studies, Confucius is not concreted as a model but is regarded as a great ancient person deserving constant scrutiny in different social, economical and cultural contexts. Rooted in discourse analysis, the article finally provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution towards cross-cultural understanding of discursive practices surrounding Confucius identity. And it at last closes with a call for more receptive interpretation of Confucius as an inscrutable human-being rather than a stereotyped concept in TIME.

Racism and Alienation in Of the Coming of John

“Of the Coming of John” is a short story in Du Bois’s famous book The Souls of Black Folk. In his book The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois spokes of an African American “double consciousness”. An African American lives within the Veil and faces a dilemma of being both an American and a Negro. In the book, Du Bois shows how little the black people’s life has changed after the abolishment of slavery and how they have suffered from the legacy of racism. The short story “Of the Coming of John” is thought-provoking and it brings almost all of the racial issues to our mind. The black John’s tragic life clearly shows that racism does not only alienate the black people but also make the white people inhumane and alienated.
