About the speaker: Dr. Shang Guowen is a Research Fellow with the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He earned his PhD in linguistics from the National University of Singapore in 2011. His research interests include Cognitive-functionallinguistics, Chinese grammar studies, and language education and planning. His articles appeared in Language and Linguistics, Journal of Chinese Language Teaching, Contemporary Research in Modern Chinese, Language Teaching and Linguistic Studies, etc. Currently he is being engaged in two MOE-funded research projects concerning Chinese language curriculum evaluation in Singapore’s primary and secondary schools.  

Abstract: Recent years have seen a growing interest in the study of linguistic subjectivity in the cognitive-functional literature, i.e., how the speaker’s SELF is involved in expressions. Due to the multiple ways of reference to the speaker, subjectivity can be conveyed by a variety of linguistic forms. However, despite its popularity and ubiquity, the concept of subjectivity in language is ill-defined, and the ways to detect subjectivity are vague. The characterization of linguistic subjectivity from different perspectives has led to heterogeneity of interpretations and caused general confusion to researchers. This study sorts out and generalizes the trends of the recent endeavors to subjectivity in linguistics. In particular, it compares four emerging approaches to subjectivity, advocated by Langacker, Traugott, Nuyts, and Smet&Verstra eterespectively, arguing that the different treatments of linguistic subjectivity resulted from the scholars’ diversified theoretical objectives in research. It is also found that the researchers in Chinese linguistics demonstrate a particular preference for Traugott’s approach to subjectification. In light of the merits and possible inadequacies of each method, we suggest that subjectivity studies should adopt a comprehensive approach involving synchronic and diachronic dimensions, and more efforts be put to how subjectivity constrains the grammaticality of the linguistic expressions.
