Place and Jingyi(场所和经义)

A Multi-site Ethnography in Datangwu Village, Zhejiang Province and Gu Pan Pool, Qufu, Shangdong Province

Abstract: The author carries out a historical ethnography in two places to explore the heritage of Chinese traditional education(Classics经学) which has been discontinued for a century. The author aims to reengage China’s past in a dialogue with the present Enlightenment construction of pedagogies and a conception of school reform framed by values of democratic citizenship and social responsibility, and to view past as resources for the future education both in philosophy and practices.

  The ongoing fieldwork is in a village where Tang Shouqian, a late Jingshi(passed the palace examination in Imperial Civil Service examination in 1892), was born and spend most part of his life. The other site is in Gu Pan Pool Neighborhood, located in the southeastern part of Confucius’ birthplace, City of Qufu, the birth place of Confucius. Gu Pan Pool古泮池has been considered as the source of Chinese traditional classic education as water flowing in front of Confucius Temple called Pan River(泮水) originates in Gu Pan Pool. Through three-dimensional analytical framework combining the methods of discourse analysis, ethnography fieldwork and historical textual interpretation, the author explores the cultural roots of Classics learning as Gengdu Culture耕读文化(Learning Classics and cultivating in the fields), different epistemology of Jiao(educating), and discovers that the fabrics of Jingyi(经义, literally the exegetical meaning of classics) as a way of thinking has deeply weaved into people’s lives. Finally, the author points out that Jingyi can be the source of meaning to enrich the understanding and hence the sustainability related to human action in village cultural reconstruction process and urban landscaping in contemporary China.

          

 

 

 

 

从“山沟沟”到国际化的“华侨村”

 

                                ——青田某华侨村的现代化构建初探

摘要:幸庄是青田典型的华侨村,从“山沟沟”发展到现在小有名气的“华侨村”。本文引入“场所”(place)的概念,采用民族志的研究方法,在幸庄进行了三个月的田野调查,深入人们的日常生活,村庄的一草一木,通过开放式(半开放式)访谈与参与观察,试着分析与解读国际化的侨村是怎么通过人们的活动(包括叙事),侨村的地景(landscape)和赋予这些活动与地景的意义相互作用共同构建(making place)起来的。文中主要选取了侨村的民俗展馆,村委会大楼里的外币兑换点和村里作为社会资本的“小洋楼”为主要地景,通过分析上述地景以及围绕这些地景发生的故事,展示了幸庄人们是怎么在“现代”与“落后”的话语中挣扎,华侨身份怎么成为主流又怎么进一步把非华侨的身份逐渐边缘化,欧元的魅力不仅在于曾经的九比一,更是一种把这个“农村”与欧洲联系起来的国际化工具。
