ERPP
夏杨露
Abstract:As a part of English for Special Purpose (ESP), English for Research and Publication Purpose (ERPP) has become a hot point in the field of ESP. In this session, much attention will be paid to the reason for the existence of academic publication and the inequalities in academic publishing. Apart from that, focus should be given to the research approaches and theories in ERPP: Discourse analysis, social constructivism and situated learning theory. In the end, we need to consider how the research may be applied to pedagogy and what should go into a course designed to prepare novice writers, especially EAL writers in writing for publication.

Study on Students’ Psychological Effect Under Teachers’ Appraisal
黄晓飞
Abstract:The article reviews firstly some theoretical studies and empirical researches on teachers’ appraisal, which include the studies of general praisebehavior-specific praise and comparison between these two types of praise. After briefly reviewing the literature, the author put forward 5 questions, that is (1) Can teacher praise benefit students in building up their confidence in learning English and helpful in creating a harmonious class atmosphere? (2) Does general praise work? (3) Which type of praise is preferred by students, general praise or behavior-specific praise? (4) Do students embrace praise even when they feel unsatisfied with their answer? (5) Does praise to one student affect other students psychologically? Questionnaire is designed and interviews and the class are recorded. After detailed analysis of the collected data, the result indicated that (1) Praise can benefit students in learning English (2) Among these two types, behavior-specific praise outperformed the general praise. (3) Teachers’ appraisal on one student may affect others psychologically. Finally, limitations of this study and future orientations are stated.

Language Emergence and Computational Simulation
敬应奇
Abstract: Human language, as a complex adaptive system (CAS), is evolving and developing through social communication. Based on this notion, the emergence of language is a key issue in various disciplines, such as anthropology, genetics, and linguistics. With the interdisciplinary exchange, many researchers tend to use computational simulation to characterize the emergent process. In this talk, two computational models, a vocabulary interaction model and a coevolution model of lexicon, syntax and social structure, are introduced, which may shed some new light on the issue. Also, some judgments of the approach are made in the final part.

The influence of emotional words on attention
周景升

Abstract: Mental lexicon refers to those words whichhave stored in our long-term memory. It contains the semantic information, syntaxinformation, and phonetic information of a word. While some words have emotional features and may rise people’s emotional degree, then we call these words as emotional words. It has learnt that participants have difficulty when reporting the second of two targets, and this phenomenon is called attentional blink. As was studied, emotional words would attract more attention. Therefore, we wonder when the second targets are emotional words the effect of attentional blink would be reduced or not.
