On Translation of Images in Classical Chinese Poetry:
A Perspective of XYZ’s Principle of Beauty in Sense

Abstract：Classical Chinese poetry, an important part of Chinese culture, has always been a great task for translators, home and abroad. As a special literary form, it embodies rich cultural information.Its highly figurative and expressive power not only lies in its ideas, but also in its vivid images. And the poetic sense is conveyed through the flexible use of images. The image reconstruction plays a key role in rendering the whole poem, and the precise translation of images will help main the invariant core of the original poem. Professor Xu Yuanchong (XYZ) put forward the “Three Beauties” principle which is of great significance to the practice of poetry translation, and the principle of beauty in sense is the most important one. When translating images, the soul of poetry, the translator should learn to choose the best possible words in the best possible order borrow poetic diction and enhance beauty in sense.

Place、Space and Nature- Yifu Tuan’s Farewell Speech

Abstract: Yifu Tuan is a renowned Chinese-American geographer in the humanistic geography circles of the world and merging Chinese cultural quintessence into western geography in his academic research ideas. His humanistic geography thoughts have exerted great influence on geography circles of western countries and other countries, which are closely related to the western world. Since 1970s, Yifu Tuan has enjoyed a high reputation at the world’s humanistic geography forum. In his research, he stresses the rich relationship of human’s subjective feeling and objective geographical environment, and interprets it with wisdom, which attracted the interest of great number of scholars. This paper is Yifu Tuan’s farewell speech. In it, Yifu Tuan, by means of the core concepts of space, place and physical geography, expounds his humanistic geography ideas in his life.

摘要：作为享誉世界的人文地理学泰斗，美籍华人段义孚从事地理学研究近半世纪，其学术研究及思想将中国文化精髓汇入西方地理学中。自二十世纪七十年代以来，段义孚的人文主义地理学思想在西方地理学界，以及与地理学关系密切的其他学科领域，产生了重大影响。本文是段义孚教授的告别演说译稿，有关他一生的人文地理学研究思想。文中，段义孚将人的种种主观情性与客观地理环境进行了极具智慧的阐发，最终，就人生故事与理论中展开了对空间、地方和自然核心人文地理概念的阐释。

The Truth-Spirit of Philip Sidney and Emily Dickinson

Abstract: Art is true, or is capable of truth, is a notion frequently implied in art criticism and sometimes defended in aesthetic theory “truth” is either given a special meaning as “sincere statement of feeling”, or is the “adjunct of reality”. Literally, the “truth” of poetry means the agreement, of poetic assertion with the things which they refer. The present paper draws on Heidegger’s argument about the relationship among language, poetry and thinking to analyze the common belief of Poets Philip Sidney and Emily Dickinson on the truth in poetry.
