A Comparative Study of Two English Translations of Selective Stories of Lu Hsün from the Perspectives of Functional Equivalence and Cross-Cultural Transmission

Yang Jingya
AbstractIn 2012, the famous Chinese writer Mo Yan has won the Nobel Prize in Literature, filling in the blank that no Chinese writer has won the prize for over 100 years. Literary translation, as the bridge connecting modern and contemporary Chinese literature to the Nobel Prize, plays an indispensable role for Chinese literature to go outside. As the founder of modern Chinese culture and the pioneer of Chinese literary translation, Lu Hsün initiates to take farmers and intellectuals as the main subjects of modern literature and takes “for human life” as his writing purpose. His works reflect his criticism to the old traditions and feudal ethics of his time. Although he writes only a few novels, these novels have established a new form of Chinese novel with modernity, freedom and criticalness, which are representative in the history of modern Chinese literature. It is a must to read his work for foreign readers who want to know Chinese literature and Chinese culture. His novels are plain and implicit with deep and sincere lyrical atmosphere, which proposes a challenge for translators to translate his work well. As the core of Eugene A. Nida’s translation theory, Functional Equivalence includes three aspects, namely meaning, style and reader’s response. Compared with previous translation theories, Functional Equivalence brings translation into the field of linguistics and it introduces culture and reader’s response into translation studies. In 2009, professor at Birkbeck College, University of London, Chinese literary scholar and translator Julia Lovell’s translation work The Real Story of Ah-Q and Other Tales of China: The Complete Fiction of Lu Xun was published by the British publishing giant and the world’s most famous English book publisher Penguin Publishing House. It is when all 33 novels of Lu Hsün were first completely translated into English and introduced to the Western readers. In 1981, on the other hand, Foreign Languages Press published the translation works of Lu Hsün by Yang Hsien-yi & Gladys Yang whose works are the typical translation of literary works of Lu Hsün. Thus this thesis is about a comparative study of two English translations of Medicine from the perspectives of cross-cultural transmission and functional equivalence, which are by Julia Lovell and by Yang Hsien-yi & Gladys Yang respectively. The comparative study aims to help readers appreciate the translations of the three famous translators for the translation skills they used and the guiding role of Nida’s functional equivalence in cross-cultural transmission.

Deconstruction of Binary Oppositions in Ragtime and Red Sorghum
Yu Fan
Abstract: This paper attempts to explore the deconstruction of binary oppositions such as fact/fiction, history/literature and present/past in E.L.Doctorow’s Ragtime and MoYan’s Red Sorghum. A brief introduction of binary oppositions is presented in the first part. In the second part, there is detailed analysis of specific texts concerning the three pairs, which demonstrates the development of binary oppositions in post-modern context. The third part focuses on why the writer manipulates the three pairs and a deep discussion of the relationships between them. The fourth part is the conclusion of the paper. There is no absolute truth, no unchallengable history or fixed sense of time in literary works. The deconstruction of binary oppositions will, direct or indirect, alter readers’ understanding model towards post-modern literature.
Key words: Binary oppositions, deconstruction, history, literature

A Comprehensive Study on the General Features of Ideational Grammatical Metaphor
Xu Yining
Abstract: According to Halliday (1991), human being’s experience is construed, exchanged, contested and transmitted by means of language. We acquire and learn language, and utilize the language to learn more . The power of the language lies in its ability in “theorizing” the world in the semantic sphere, and in “nominalizing”the word in the grammatical sphere. Language construes the meaning, and subsequently, meaning construes our knowledge and understanding. Be it commonly-embraced knowledge or highly professional scientific journals, there can be no theorizing without language, or say, without the semogenic power of the grammar (Webster, 2004). In Systemic Functional Linguistics, language is viewed to be a complex semiotic system composed by numerical strata, (Halliday and Metthiessen, 1999; 2004, Yang, 2008). Semantic stratum deals with the conversion of human experience and interpersonal relation into meanings. Grammatical stratum on the other hand, makes this conversion proceed into the stage of wordings. Traditionally, the grammatical units tallies congruently with the semantic patterns, however, as a means of reshaping human being’s experience, metaphors serve as a way in connecting semantics and grammar in an otherwise fixed way. Grammatical metaphor made it possible for the cross-coupling between the grammatical stratum and the semantic stratum, and thus engenders the realignment or say, the incongruent realization in expression. In Systemic Functional Linguistics, meaning is believed to be realized by form. In this sense, grammatical metaphor, as a realigned and incongruent grammatical expression of one certain semantic choice, plays the part in semantic remeaning instead of solely grammatical rewording. From this light, the notion of grammatical metaphor can facilitate the understanding of the nature of language at the semantic level
