内容提要:
It eludes no scholar’s observation that the debates on new cross-cultural interactions between the West and the East have become increasingly noticeable in recent literary studies. Theoretical discussions and critical explorations of the impact of globalization upon world literature have occupied the central stage of many academic publications and conferences in the past few years. Influenced by the development of multiculturalism, this paradigm shift has brought about a heightened awareness of international connection of literary production and interpretation. In this broad context, it is significant to note that as one of the most relevant phenomena of contemporary times, literary works that transcend different cultural spheres unveil a dazzling landscape of artistic creativity and imaginative power. They provide not only valuable materials but also challenging opportunities for us to examine some of the most important issues in critical theory. In response to such a situation, this project launches a critical inquiry into the practice of cross-cultural framing, which implies change, transformation, and appropriation of a culture in a different social, political, and cultural context. As a result of the encounter of different systems of epistemological signification, cultural frame may take on special meanings in a transnational space that provides the most common terrain on which both the conflict and convergence between Orientalism and Occidentalism have taken place. Through in-depth analyses, this project will highlight the tension as well as the complexity associated with new representations of the Other/Self across different cultures.
