Firstly, methods of sampling survey and content analysis are adopted to compare and analyze the numbers and subject types of the news reports. Secondly, the news reports serve as original data for constructing a small-scale target corpus and a reference corpus in which the retrieval software AntConc is applied to extract a keyword list and further arrive at subject terms of the reports. It attempts to analyze the similarities and differences of reports from both domestic and foreign media, hoping to uncover different ideologies, national interests as well as bias hidden behind.

Critical Discourse Analysis of Disaster Newsin Chinese and American Media
Abstract: The increasing number of disasters in the last few decades have drawn people's attention to the reporting of them in that disaster news could not only deliver instant information, but also help the government make quick and precise decisions and comfort people’s feelings. News reports from three Chinese media (People's Daily, Xinhua Daily Telegraph and China News Service) and three English media (The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and AP) are collected to build four corpora. Then Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is also applied to analyze wordlists, clusters and concordance. This research finds that all media pay great attention to the aftermath and relief work. However, Chinese media emphasize propaganda and facts, while American media focus on shaping public opinions and attach more to people’s feelings. Government agencies and agents are most frequently mentioned by the six media. National interests, character of media and their reporting concepts as well as criteria set for news values are four major reasons for their differences.
Key Words: disaster news; CDA; corpus; concordance; cluster
