内容预告/ Highlights on the Lecture:
Before the introduction of the technology of printing with metal types, which was introduced into Europe from the mid-15th century, all books and other reading materials were reproduced by manual means—copying by hand, literally ‘manu-script’. For many centuries, down to about A.D. 1200, most books were copied by those dedicated to the religious life, especially monks, and they were often beautifully embellished with pictures and other decorative features. Thereafter, with the development of urban civilization, secular craftsmen took up the occupation of professional scribe, and by the late-medieval period (A.D. 1300–1500) many literate and educated persons from all walks of life (such as teachers, university students, merchants, local landowners and lawyers) could, and often did copy books for their own use. Such books tended to be more utilitarian in appearance, but could still be decorated with fine calligraphy.
The kinds of script used for reproducing literary texts also evolved in various ways across the same period. While the traditional and laborious ‘text hand’ of the monastic culture was preserved for books of the best quality, new varieties of cursive script, often involving the extensive use of abbreviations, also came into use, making the copying of texts a swifter and more economical process.
This lecture will illustrate and discuss the historical development of the main kinds of script used to transmit English literary texts from around A. D. 1200 down to the beginning of the print era, in around A.D. 1450–1500: chivalric romances, tales, lyric poetry, religious works of many types, plays, and the writings of major authors of the time such as Geoffrey Chaucer (the Canterbury Tales) and William Langland (Piers Plowman).
