In this talk, I will introduce the usefulness of parallel texts in Cognitive Linguistics research. Although parallel texts have been extensively used in the study of linguistic typology (which usually assumes a quantitative approach), there has not been a coherent body of literature in the study of language and thought. I will discuss how the methodology can reveal the usage of deictic verbs as viewpoint operators that other methods cannot as a case in point. I expect the talk to be interesting to scholars in linguistics, stylistics, and translation (of literature).
嘉宾简介：
Dr. Wei-lun Lu is currently the Language Program Coordinator in the Center for Chinese Studies, Masaryk University. Dr. Lu holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from National Taiwan University. Prior to his appointment at the Center, he was a Fulbrighter to Rice University, U.S.A. (2009-10), a Guest Researcher at Leiden University, Netherlands (2011-12), an Assistant Professor at National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (Fall 2012), and a Research Fellow in the English Department of Masaryk University (Spring 2013-Fall 2015). He adopts a linguistic (discourse-analytic) approach to the Chinese culture and thinking. The types of discourse he is interested in working with include translated world masterpieces (contrasting Chinese and English), and leadership discourse.
