Abstract: As the result of modernity, some distinctive features of the urban mode of life have often been described sociologically as consisting of the substitution of secondary for primary contacts, the weakening of bonds of kinship, and the declining social significance of the family, the disappearance of the neighborhood. In other words, the city-dweller is not a home-owner, and since a transitory habitat does not generate binding traditions and sentiments, only rarely is he truly a neighbor, and the undermining of the traditional basis of social solidarity. All these phenomena can be substantially verified through objective indices. As the historical and cultural core area of Hangzhou, Shangcheng has accumulated abundant cultural heritages and the wisdoms of urban planning from ancient times to recent 60 years since the found of Republic of China. While, how to combine the cultural essence inherited from the past generations and the nowadays community self-government is becoming the crucial question. By reading local gazetteers and visiting the local people, including residents and officials in the last year, this thesis aims to provide an alternative way of modern urban governing by replanting the ancient essence into the local soil.

Abstract: Studies on referential behaviors enjoy a long history and attract a growing amount of attention of researchers in different fields from syntactic, pragmatic, cognitive and functional approaches. To conduct a successful reference behavior, it does not only involve linguistic realization but also other various non-linguistic modes, such as gesture. Therefore, the thesis wants to explore how a speaker uses linguistic and gestural modes together to refer to present people in conversation. Based on interviews which are easy to investigate, the conclusions can be made that a speaker may use pointing gestures toward the hearer in company with personalreferences in referring to the present hearer, mainly in order to highlight the hearer, show respector indicate a shift of a turn and that a speaker may use pointing gestures toward the third participant in company with personalreferences in referring to the third participant in conversation, mainly in order to highlight the third participant, arouse his attention and clarify the referent.
