Understanding the “Every” of Everyman

Abstract: Some scholars in Middle English literature suggest that the modern idea of individualis emerged from the medieval period. However, other critics strongly contest that the discovery of individual is somehow chanced upon with the dawning of the Renaissance. Inspired by the conflicted claims, this paper explores the individual identityand corporate identity in a medieval morality playEveryman, which means how broadly we should understand the “every” of Everyman. For answer, this paper takes a close examination on the play’s language and penitential practice, proving that Everyman is arepresentative of medievalindividualindeed, butat the same time can only exist in relationships to “every man” in community.

Neo-slave Narrative in Flight to Canada

Deeply rooted in slave narrative, neo-slave narrative with Flight to Canada as a typical example, is a complicated rewriting/ of slave narrative. Ishmael Reed transfigures nontextual artistic, politican and social elements of Voodoo into a written custom of slavery-neo-slave narrative. With a crise de loa(possession) as one of the most important practives of Voodoo, racial characters are ridden by gender and racial stereotypes in the same way which loa takes possession of Voodoo practitioners in Flight to Canada. With syncretism as one of the most significant aesthetics, Reed incorpates varied elements into Flight to Canada with works and characters of Edgar Allan Poe as the most evident example. Besides, the approach of anachronism also shows Reed’s idea of syncretism. With Flight to Cananda as a neo-slave narrative work, Reed refutes the stereotype in neo-slave and questions the long accepted truth besides slavery.
