A Corpus-based Study on Writer/reader Visibility in English Writing by Chinese EFL Learners

Abstract: Previous studies by Petch-Tyson (1998) and Cobb (2003) concluded that EFL learners tend to contain more personal involvement than native speakers in their writing, making it resemble spoken language as a result. Writer/reader (W/R) visibility is regarded as an important indicator of personal involvement. This paper examines the degree of W/R visibility in English writing by university-level Chinese learners to verify the applicability of the previous findings on Chinese learners. Based on the data collected in the corpora CLEC, WECCL and LOCNESS, the results show that Chinese EFL learners have the tendency to employ more features of W/R visibility than native speakers, for example, the frequent use of first or second person reference and words that represent mental process. Besides, the paper also reveals little distinction on W/R visibility between English and non-English majors, suggesting the inefficiency of the writing ability of today’s English majors.

A Brief Study on Denmark Bicycle Culture

Abstract: The capital city Copenhagen is world-famous for its bicycle culture and now officially the first Bike City in the World. But it is quite a different picture in China. Chinese people prefer a car which is mostly taken as a symbol of social status. This paper is focused on the Denmark bicycle culture including its history, infrastructure, initiate, impact and the brief comparison between Denmark bicycle culture and the present state of Chinese bicycling. The aim of this paper is to show the environment-friendly Copenhagen bicycle culture to Chinese people and expect more Chinese people to choose this green means of transportation and ease their stereotype of taking a car as a symbol of social status.

媒介暴力下《世外桃源》中的“超真实”迷局

摘要：《世外桃源》是英国当代小说家格雷厄姆・斯威夫特的第四部长篇小说，影像媒介入侵下仿像与真实互相交织、模糊混杂是整部小说要表达的重要主题。本文借助让・波德里亚的“超真实”概念和相关后现代媒介理论来理解和阐释《世外桃源》文本中符号的狂欢对于表征与事实间的割裂、主体意识中仿像在媒介中扩张的现实危机，以及个体试图打破、超越和规避这种“超真实”迷局深重的无力感。

西比拉的爱情收场：挣脱婚姻的束缚

摘要：《我的光辉生涯》是迈尔斯・弗兰克林文学成就最高的一部作品，突出刻画了丛林少女西比拉・梅尔文与现实抗争、追求独立人格的人物形象。在以物质基础为支柱的传统婚姻中，西比拉不为金钱所动，向往的是真正的爱情。她唯一爱过的人是比彻姆，即便在他破产时也依旧对之不离不弃。西比拉从她外祖母、姨妈、妈妈和姆斯瓦特太太身上深深地感受到了婚姻对她们生活所造成的束缚。因此，当比彻姆再次大富大贵后，她却拒绝了他的求婚，努力挣脱婚姻的桎梏。西比拉扭曲的性格和倔强的心理反映了她对传统社会观念的反抗和对自由生活的大胆追求。
