The Component Introducing a Novel Unit of Syntactic Structure
牛若晨
Abstract: This contribution introduces a novel unit of syntactic analysis, which is called the component. The validity and utility of the component unit are established in terms of chunking. When informants organize the words of sentences into groups, they are creating chunks, and these chunks then qualify as components in dependency syntax. By acknowledging the nature of chunking and the component unit, it is possible to cast light on controversial aspects of dependency hierarchies. In particular, the component unit, informant data, and the reasoning based on these provide a strong argument in favor of the traditional DG assumptions about hierarchical status of many function words (auxiliary verbs, prepositions, subordinators, etc.), and in so doing, they contradict the Universal Dependencies (UD) annotation scheme. The data discussed here are from English, but the methodology and reasoning employed are easily extendable to other languages.

Principles of Selecting Reading Passages for College English Textbooks Based on Needs Analysis
王萍
Abstract: Nowadays, the reform in teaching methods and textbooks is one of the heated research projects in Foreign Language Teaching (FLT),buta complete theoretical system for textbook compiling hasn’t formed in China yet, let alone principles of selecting reading passages. By conducting a questionnaire investigation about students’ needs and opinions on reading passages, the thesis puts forward ECR Principles of selecting reading passages for college English textbooks, which consists of Energetic Principle, Challenging Principle and Rewarding Principle. More specifically, the reading passages for college English learning should possess the features of entertainment, variety, modernity, authenticity, and extensibility, being challenging both in language acquisition and ability cultivation, and being rewarding to students’ study and life both in the short and long run.

The Analysis on shi-support construction under Generative Syntax
蒋一正
Abstract: The elliptical constructions are of central interest to theoretical linguists. Much of the work has been done to investigate the cause of the ellipsis. The analysis of VP ellipsis can be divided into two groups: PF-deletion and LF-copy. Recent years, the analyses of VP-ellipsis in Chinese mainly focus on four types, among which shi-support construction[1] is special since it is hard to find an equivalency in English. The accounts for the elided part in shi-support construction are controversial. This paper points out the problems existing in others’ analyses and employs focus movement approach to account for the elided part in shi-support construction. The research assumes that neither VP nor other grammar categories can be elided under the general contrast condition, revising Johnson (2001)’s general contrast condition.

[1] shi-support construction is different from shi construction. The difference will be explained in Chapter 2.
