内容提要：
Proverbs are ready-made recipes for negotiating the shallows and rapids of communal life. They are axle grease that smooths the bearings of social truck, especially at the points of high friction. They are living fossils of societies long gone. And like all fossils, they can tell us a lot about the past--and the present--if asked the right way.
Part detective story, part tale of the living dead, my lecture will tell you what I learned about past social life from proverbs ranging from America to China and everywhere in between.
Peter Swirski教授简介：
彼得?斯维尔斯基（Peter Swirski) 出生于1966年,是入选加拿大名人录 Who's Who 的加籍学者和文学批评家，同时也是亚马逊上美国文学史文学批评和加拿大文学史和文学批评方面的畅销书作者。他是美国文学和美国研究专家，已经出版17部专著，研究范围涉及美国文学、文化、历史、政治、社会、美国流行文化以及文学与科学、哲学、美学的关系和文学达尔文主义等。重要著作包括：获奖著作《奇葩美国，乱象政治》（Ars Americana, ArsPolitica）（2010）和美国流行文化研究的主流作品《从底层到盲流》（From Lowbrow to Nobrow）（2005）、《美国乌托邦和社会工程》（American Utopia and Social Engineering）（2011），《美国政治虚幻小说》（American Political Fictions）（2015），以及数字未来学畅销书《从文学到数字文学》（From Literature to Biterature）（2013）。他还是近代作家和哲学家斯坦尼斯拉夫?莱姆的领衔研究者。已发表论文百篇。他的工作经历丰富，曾任：波兰西里西亚大学的教授，中国中山大学外国语学院领军人才，加拿大阿尔伯塔大学沃斯研究院的高级研究者、中国暨南大学美国研究中心荣誉教授、芬兰赫尔辛基高级学院任教授和研究总监、中国华南理工大学美国研究荣誉教授、不列颠哥伦比亚大学美国文学荣誉教授。
