内容简介：
This talk examines Liang Qichao’s perspective on the relation between the nation and internationalism. InThe Future of New China (Xin Zhongguo weilai ji) Chinese nationalists identify with Byron’s poems and admire the English poet for his generous support for the Greek independence movement. I argue that the Chinese nationalists’ access to the worlddoes not come from a sense of Byron’s work as world literature. Rather, their national approach to the world is premised on the perception that one nation’s pursuit of autonomy and liberation from foreign and domestic oppressors is meaningful for other nations. National aspirations for equality among all nations and mutual support for each other define the Chinese thinking of world literature in the spirit of internationalism. In this sense, internationalism sets itself off from cosmopolitanism, and Liang’s imagination of world literature differs from the fashionable concept of world literature as a transcendent and transnational superstructure.
学者简介：
王斑，1982年在北京外国语大学获得英语学士，1985年于该校获英国文学硕士学位。1993年获加州大学洛杉矶分校比较文学博士学位。先后任教于纽约州立大学、新泽西罗格斯大学，2007年聘为斯坦福大学东亚系和比较文学系教授。研究方向涉及文学、美学、历史、国际政治、电影及大众文化。1997与2001年两次获美国人文基金学术研究奖励。主要著作有：The Sublime Figure of History: Aesthetics and Politics in Twentieth-Century China (此书中文译本为《历史的崇高形象》); Narrative Perspective and Irony in Chinese and American Fiction; Illuminations from the Past。主编Chinese Visions of World Order: Tianxia, Culture, and World Politics; Words and Their Stories: Essays on the Language of the Chinese Revolution。合编Trauma and Cinema; China and New Left Visions; Debating Socialist Legacy in China。中文著作有《历史与记忆：全球化的质疑》（南京大学再版书名为《全球化阴影下的历史与记忆》）。合编《美国大学课堂里的中国：旅美学者自述》。合译本雅明的《启迪》。
