On Translation Strategies for Cultural-specific Items in Science Fiction from the Perspective of Susan Bassnett’s Cultural Translation Theory --- A Case Study of The Three-Body Problem

Abstract: The Chinese science-fiction novel The Three-Body Problem won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel, which attracts people’s attention to a special literary form, science fiction. There is no denying that translation plays a crucial role in The Three-Body Problem’s stepping onto the world stage, and the translator’s strategies for tackling a great number of Chinese cultural-specific items (CSI) in the book are worth probing into. However, with its uniqueness, translation studies of science fiction have not been in profusion so far in China and little attention has been paid to the intercultural aspect of science fiction translation. The present study focuses on the translation strategies for CSIs in science fiction with The Three-Body Problem as a case. On the basis of previous findings from Javier Franco Aixela on CSIs, this thesis concludes six translation strategies for CSIs, namely linguistic (non-cultural) translation, extratextual gloss, intratextual gloss, paraphrase, naturalization and deletion, all of which are analyzed from the perspective of Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory. The case study has found that among these six strategies, only extratextual gloss, intratextual gloss, paraphrase and naturalization are in line with Bassnett’s cultural translation theory. The findings of this study will hopefully play a guiding role in not only science fiction translation but also other literary works in the context of culture in the future.

“剑桥七杰”杜明德在川东传教事迹研究

摘要：杜明德在清朝末年先后在四川东北部的保宁、巴州、绥定创站传教，在川东的教会有很大的影响力，然而相关的研究寥寥无几。通过以《亿万华民》（China’s Millions）为主要资料，辅以地方志等相关文献，杜明德在川东传教的具体事迹得以还原，同时再现还有旧中国时期一位传教士眼中的川东风貌。

葆灵往事：简述江西葆灵女中的发展与演变

摘要：西方来华传教士于1867年首来江西创办学校，一直到1951年西方传教士集体离开中国大陆，传教士在江西所办教会学校由江西省教育厅接管，一共历经84载。据统计基督教新教在近代江西创办学校多达80余所，而现今国内关于江西省教会学校的研究却寥寥无几，就连《江西省志・教育志》一书也只是粗略地提及了江西省内的几所教会学校，并无详细阐述。本文将从江西省教会中学―葆灵女中的发展演变出发从而一探近代江西教会学校的沧桑巨变。

《奥德利夫人的秘密》中“家中天使”的两面性

摘要：《奥德利夫人的秘密》是玛丽•伊丽莎白•布雷登第一部展现女性具有天使和魔鬼两面性的小说。作品中的女主人公奥德利夫人作为维多利亚时期典型女性的代表，即家中天使，同样具有两面性：天使的一面以及反叛的一面。而这种天使两面性的根源在于女性面对父权制社会下道德与法律的束缚，在不同境遇下所做出的相应抉择。
