Changes of Modal Verbs across Registers

AbstractStarting with the controversy between Neil Millar and Geoffrey Leech about the frequency changes of modal verbs, this study has traced the diachronic variation of modal verbs across five registers, academic, fiction, magazine, newspaper and spoken texts based on a sub-corpora of COCA, trying to explain the difference between the two researchers’ studies from the register perspective and to arouse the register consciousness in corpus-based study. The results show that the change of modals varies with registers, with Fiction recording an unusually increased usage. Modals in fiction register are further investigated.

基于语料库的辩论和演讲语体的计量研究

摘要:随着语料库的兴起,语体研究体现出明显的定量化趋势。本研究选取美国民主党总统候选人希拉里・克林顿的演讲和辩论文本自建语料库,从词汇复杂度角度对两种语体进行计量分析与比较,得出以下结论:希拉里辩论和演讲语体在词汇复杂度方面差异显著,主要体现在辩论语体更倾向于使用高频词、多义词,且语义更加连贯,而演讲语体中词汇多样性及词语上义性更高。

Is There Syntactic Emergence in Second Language Acquisition?

Abstract

Language acquisition, now considered as a complex, dynamic, emergent, and nonlinear process, attracts great attention, especially the acquisition of syntax. A phase transition or emergent phenomenon of syntax during the process of native language learning is found to be at the age of 24 months in early research. However, a macroscopic description of syntactic development of interlanguage is lacking due to the limitations of traditional descriptive approaches. This study attempts to fill this gap by adopting the methodology of linguistic complex network. After analyzing network properties of nine networks of compositions written by primary school students to senior high school students, three major findings are obtained. 1) All the nine grades display the non-trivial network properties such as being small-world and scale-free. No phase transition of network reorganization is observed. 2) Primary school students tend to rely heavily on their mother tongue in order to express their ideas. Network statistical properties reveal the significant increase of lexical diversity in the first year of junior middle school and relatively lagging maturation of syntax in the third year of junior middle school and the first year of senior high school. 3) The fluctuation or fossilization of syntactic capacity among senior high school students is also observed by the topological methodology.

从称数一致看英语it-分裂构式

――一项基于大型语料库的研究

摘要:针对英语it-分裂构式的称数一致存在多种可能性的情况,例如“It is the investors who gain/gains the most.”“It is I/me who am/is responsible.” 本研究基于三个大型语料库,BNCCOCANOW,对英语it-分裂构式It vb NPplural [PN2 V2 …]展开实证研究,从而对学界存在争议的两种分析方法,即外置说和填充说展开论证。研究发现,从身、性、数、格的一致四个角度均可证明外置说对真实语言现象有更强的解释力,而且与英语的历时发展趋势一致。
