内容提要

Dignity requires efficacious agency and viable aspirations.  It is necessary for well-being and is a resource to help defeat demeaning stereotypes, for example, demeaning stereotypes of women as weak, Baltic Europeans as crude, Africans as servile, Chinese as sneaky, etc.  Dignity, I will argue, is something we must constantly create.  Dignity is not, contrary to the unity theory of virtue, the result of sue genesis characters trait that determine right action.

Dignity helps make possible well-being because it shapes self-regard in ways that promote self-confidence and advocacy to combat humiliation.  Honor, for example, always eludes slaves because honor requires that an individual belong to group that can be seen as honorable; circa, dignity is a species of honor.  If the Chinese, as people, Baltic Europeans as a regional population, or African Americans as an ethnic/racial group are stereotyped as a “kind” lacking honor or dignity grounding capacities (for example, trustworthy, reasonable, capable of autonomous choice) then honor cannot be authentically granted to individual members of that group.   Genuine honor will always elude individuals that try securing deference from those that consider their ‘kind’ inferior.

I use the image of a barracado (fence across the center of a slave ship) to help describe tools used to sustain humiliated and shame.  The expression of dignity can be radically different, but its grounding capacities remarkably similar.  I use examples from science fiction literature and portraits that accompany African American literature to help defend an ethics of advocacy that promote the value of dignity.
