Filipino novels in English, Tagalog and other Philippine languages teem with corrupt bureaucrats and politicians, greedy capitalists and industrialists, abusive landlords, oppressed peasants, and the ignorant poor, as well as activists, nationalists, committed intellectuals, caught up in national and social liberation struggles.

From the nineteenth-century social realist novels of Jose Rizal -- the country’s national hero -- to today’s modern and modernist novels, the main protagonists are at once sketched out as individual characters as well as allegorically rendered as collective subject who are coming into consciousness about their individual and collective identity and destiny. Historically, they constitute the majority of the Filipinos from the oppressed “Indios” of the Spanish colonial regime to the Filipino “masa” of the contemporary society, at once despairing yet determined to regain individual integrity and national dignity over and over from their colonial masters and the persistent betrayals of the Filipino elite in the postcolonial present.

In the novels, at least, a two-pronged self-awareness is fleshed out individually and set in motion allegorically: from an individual subject against oppressors, and a collectivity within a unity of the nation, and other types of social collectivities against various forms of social and national subjugation. As embodied in the Rizal tradition in Philippine literature, this self-awareness is shaped by the formal structure of the Bildungsroman, becoming an aesthetic of individual and collective formation. In his sense, the ethical imperative is the force that impels the formal structuring of such two-pronged subject formation associative of the Bildungsroman. In this formal structuring, the ethical imperative becomes constitutive of the aesthetic of the bildungsroman of a people whose literature and history are replete with social and national struggles for liberation which are fought, won and lost only to be fought, won and lost again.

A brief historical survey of Philippine literature will be introduced in the lecture, but the illustrative focus of the discussion will be the Rosales saga, a series of historical and socio-political novels by F. Sionil Jose, a Filipino national artist, written from the 1960s to the 1980s.
