Milton’s Theodicy and Free Will Defense

Abstract: The OED glosses theodicy as “The, or a, vindication of the divine attributes, esp. justice and holiness, in respect to the existence of evil; a writing, doctrine or theory intended to ‘justify the ways of God to men.’” In Paradise Lost, Milton expounds on his theodicy by justifying the ways of God to Man. Also, the ways of God to Man are in a way the same as that of God to all the ethereal powers and spirits. From the perspective of Satan, he admits that he is created by God and that God has done him justice. From the above three aspects, the paper tries to make it clear that although free will can bring about evil, the amount of goodness surpasses that of evil. Therefore, free will is worth it and God’s making creatures with the potential to go evil is consistent with his being all powerful and wholly good.

A Contrastive Analysis on Two Translation Versions of Humorous Subtitles in the Big Bang Theory by Two Translation Groups: From Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory

Abstract: With the development of Internet, people from different countries can watch TV series from other countries. For Chinese, the wide spread of American TV series shows great significance in their daily lives. The wide spread of them enriches their cultural horizon and helps them to learn American English well. The typical example of the popular spread of American TV series is American sitcoms, such as Friends, Desperate Housewives, The Big Bang Theory and so on. But why can they be as popular among Chinese audiences as they do within American audiences? How can Chinese audiences understand the humor created by a group of American screenwriters, which is acted by a group of American actors and showed in such an American cultural background? The answer is the necessary existence of subtitle translation groups, who build a bridge between American humorous subtitle and Chinese audiences. This paper conducts the research on the contrastive analysis on the two translation versions of humorous subtitles in The Big Bang Theory by YYeTs and Yidianyuan Subtitle Translation Groups from perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory. The author tries to find out the humorous effect transferred in two translation versions, the translation strategies of them and the cultural identity they take.
