摘要:
The lecture will provide a short history of the development of English. From relatively humble beginnings around 450, English developed into a world language from ca. 1600 onwards. I shall briefly sketch the historical background (with dates such as 449, 1066 etc.), and then trace the development of English on the various linguistic levels, including orthography, the Great Vowel Shift, inflexional patterns, syntactic changes, and vocabulary.
