摘要:
What if we are invited by the editors of the First Folio to read the collected works of Shakespeare as one gigantic epitaph? What if additional prefatory material inserted by the editors of the Third and Fourth Folios followed suit? Burt maintains that the Folio orients us to a future, a reading to come that will be plagued by partially successfully attempts to purge the earlier versions of textual corruption: corrections of older errors are accompanied by new ones; the identities of animus contributors such as John Milton and printers gradually appear on title pages, the publication history reads like a ghost story.
