How Do We Begin Literary Studies? My Academic Dialogue with the Literary Texts
主讲人介绍
Tsuyoshi Namigata is a Professor of Modern Japanese Literature and Comparative Literature at the Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies, Kyushu University, Japan. He was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Japanese Studies of Seoul National University, Korea, 2011-2012, and the Harvard-Yenching Institute, the United States, 2022-2023. He published his Ph.D. dissertation as a monograph of Ekkyo no Avangyarudo [Border-Crossings in the Japanese Avantgarde] in 2005, later translated into Korean in 2013. He is now trying to examine the historical meaning of Japanese literary modernism during wartime and write the regional history of literary modernism in East Asia.
讲座提要
“Why do you take the trouble of writing a paper on a novel instead of appreciating and enjoying it?” “Literary scholars read novels and just write what they feel as the essays on them, don’t they?” “What is the use of literary studies?” These are questions that anyone involved in literary studies may encounter. However, if we look at it from a different perspective, they ask these questions because they are all curious about what makes literary studies so fascinating to us. So, let us ask ourselves again. Why do we study literature? Or why do we want to write papers on literary works? In this talk, I would like to show what parts of literary texts I was interested in and how I have been trying to write papers from the viewpoints of modern and contemporary Japanese literature and comparative literature.
