Language and Ontology: A Critical Revision of Western Metaphysics beyond Linguistic Turn and Deconstructionism
讲座提要
In the 20th century, in the course of the so-called linguistic turn, ontological questions were theorised as largely linguistic questions and thus denied metaphysical validity. But this critique of ontology has not really escaped it. For the deconstructivist claim that reality is mere fiction is no less metaphysical than the Platonic assumption that the categories of our minds are the epitome of reality. The lecture presented here will therefore go beyond this linguistic critique of ontology and provide evidence that Platonic metaphysics is based on an essential change, if not distortion, of language. For it deprives language of its constitutive communicative dimension, in other words: its essential mediality. The consequences of this ontological alienation of language for our understanding of reality will be developed in three historical steps. A look at ancient philosophy is followed by a discussion of the consequences of the appropriation of ancient ontology by Christian dogma and finally a discussion of the modern, ultimately failed, attempt to create a concept of reality beyond the loss of validity of dogma.
主讲人介绍
Andreas Kablitz is Professor of Romance Philology and Comparative Literature at the University of Cologne and served as the Director of the Petrarca Institute from 1994 to 2024.Since 2006, Kablitz has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, and in 2007, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, where he served as Chair of the Cultural Studies Section and Senator starting in 2016. In 2023, he was elected a foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.
