The Ends of Beauty: Reading the Odes of John Keats
讲座提要
Through re-readings of the Odes of John Keats, I review how the critic Helen Vendler insistently fashions these poems into a unified and complex work of art that proposes a sustained set of questions about the conditions for creativity, the forms art can take, the hierarchy of the fine arts, and the relations of art to nature and to human life. Employing Vendler’s own reading of the poetry of Jorie Graham as the moment of “excess,” I then reposition this “Keats” in the light of Anthropocene concerns, and so relocate his work more indeterminedly and contrapuntally alongside less resolved visions of a post-apocalyptic sublime to be found in contemporaries such as Byron, Shelley, Mary Shelley, and Clare.
主讲人介绍
Seán Hand is Professor of French Studies at the University of Warwick, UK. His research background is in reflexive or philosophical writings in French. He holds degrees from the University of Oxford (B.A., M.A., D. Phil.) and Warwick (MBA, D.Litt.). He is author, editor or translator of 24 book-length publications, and 60 chapters or articles. He is a Chevalier des Palmes Académiques, a member of the Academia Europæa, and a Senior Fellow of the British Higher Education Academy. He has assessed for seven different national Research Councils or Foundations, he is a Visiting Professor of several universities, and he sits on several international advisory boards, such as the Global@Venice project.
