The Limits of the Global: Lessons from Chinese Literary Studies
讲座提要
By examining the relationship between the discourses of world literature and literary theory, and between theory and poetics comparatively in the context of Western and Chinese culture, I draw on recent Chinese literary scholarship to argue that poetics and theory should be de-synonymised and that theory should not be seen as a universal lens that directs the way we reflect on literature. The notions of theory and poetics were shaped and have functioned differently in different cultural zones. The analysis of these differences involves a conceptual toolkit that goes beyond the current assumptions of Western theory. In my keynote address, I will dwell on the significance of poetics as a way of thinking about literature that has its own dynamics and significance, irreducible to the discourse of theory and setting limits to its seemingly global validity.
