讲座提要

Historically, being a professor has meant that writing and publishing academic papers is an inherent part of one's career. As a graduate student, most of my professors had built their careers on the creation of scholarly essays dealing with material they often taught in classes.  My dissertation supervisor at Duke University, Dr. Lionel Stevenson, not only lectured on Victorian literature but also published substantial biographies of the Victorian novelists William Makepeace Thackery and George Meredith. In the 1960s, however, the academic environment in United States was changing. I wrote my dissertation on theories of prosody, the mechanics of music in poetry, began teaching not only traditional literature but also the analysis and creation of poetry, continued my earlier studies of verse and translation, increased my own efforts at composing poems, began to teach the study and writing of poetry as well as what were historically considered more "academic" subjects. As Bob Dylan, the great American folk singer and later winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, sang: "The times they are a-changing."

As American universities began to offer as many courses in the creation of literature as in the history and analysis of it, the focus on scholarly writing changed.  Even my decision to study not a significant poet but the processes by which significant poets created music in their compositions suggested that scholarship could move in different directions than it had in the past. In all the work that a scholar attempts, the standards remain the same: thoughtful choice of topic, meticulous attention to the history of all issues involved, awareness of alternative approaches to the subject matter, and commitment to exploring what the future, as well as the past, might wish to understand about the issues under consideration.
