Literature exists only and always in its materializations. These are the conditions of its meaning rather than merely the containers of it. How should we understand the relationship between the authorially imagined text and the physical realization of it? Literature also lasts in reading and gains in circulation. By thinking about the materializations and receptions of the works of arguably the two greatest English writers, Shakespeare and Milton, what do we learn about creativity, the idea of literature, and the nature of world literature?
