Using metaphors of myth and social movement, this talk will examine the complex nature of culture heritage in the global context. Scholars and public media usually consider the World Heritage list as an effective mechanism to protect and inherit culture heritage. However, through illustrating the dynamic dialogue among the international organizations, the government, and the local community, I will argue that culture heritage should not be fantasized as a global rewarding system, but an “authorized” discourse to continuously reinvent myths for nation building and value making. I will also indicate that, as a new form of social movement, heritage remains one of the most powerful forces the state seeks to dominate popular narrative of “Modern China”.
