内容预告/ Highlights on the Lecture:
Everyman (c. A. D. 1500) is a representative of the late-medieval genre known as the morality play, and is one of the most important of all dramatic texts in the English language. It consists of an allegorical portrayal of ‘every man’s’ confrontation with death, an encounter that we all know we must face sooner or later. All of the play’s characters are personifications: Everyman himself; Death; Fellowship (representing Everyman’s friends); Kindred (Everyman’s relatives); Goods (his material possessions); and so on. These, and other things in which Everyman has placed his trust, desert him; and he finds himself almost alone, accompanied only by Knowledge and his Good Deeds, on the difficult road to self-knowledge that will enable him to come to terms with Death.
Though the didactic message or ‘moral’ of Everyman reflects the Christian theology of salvation through good works, the essence of the play’s plot and action is derived from an ancient Chinese Buddhist text, one of the parables or apologues in the collection referred to in English as the Miscellaneous Agama Sutras (where it is no. 101), and in Chinese as Chin Tsa-a-han-ching. This story reached the West in about the 10th century A. D., as part of a Christianised legendary life of Buddha known as Barlaam and Josaphat, which went on to be translated from Greek and Latin into many European vernaculars.
This lecture considers various aspects of Everyman in the light of its dual Buddhist-Christian origins, including its plot, structure, characterisation, language and dramatic qualities. 中世纪英语文学，尤其是戏剧的文本转播。近期学术著作有新编《约克戏剧》（两册，EETS 2009-13），《剑桥中世纪英语戏剧释读》（2008第二版）。其他发表过著作的学术领域有：中古英语文体学及文本研究，中古英语方言研究，语言史研究，书史研究，中世纪英语书信，乔叟，莎士比亚及十七世纪古书收藏家。
