Abstract:
Many Chinese films allude to or even include scenes from Peking Opera (or other types of Chinese opera). They present special challenges for translation, thanks to the density of cultural allusion, the brevity of expression and, depending on whether the music is xipi or erhuang, the speed at which the lines are recited or sung. Linda Jaivin has also translated an entire Peking Opera for the Beijing Opera Company to use as surtitles. She will talk about all of this, give plenty of examples, provide some exercises and welcomes discussion and questions in her interactive workshop.
A brief introduction to the lecturer:
Linda Jaivin is the author of eleven books, including seven novels as well as a playwright, essayist and literary translator from Chinese with a specialty in film subtitles. Among the films she has subtitled are Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster; Zhang Yimou's Hero; Jiang Wen's In the Heat of the Sun and Devils on the Doorstep; Tian Zhuangzhuang's Springtime in a Small Town; Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, Sacrifice, Forever Enthralled and more; as well as Dangerous Liaisons, Guan Yunchang and many other films. She is an associate of the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University and lives in Sydney, Australia. She is a frequent visitor to China.
中文介绍：贾佩林女士(Linda Jaivin)，澳大利亚小说家、散文家、文化评论员、剧作家、汉学家和电影字幕翻译家，曾经出版七部小说和四部非虚构作品。贾佩琳女士自幼热爱写作和电影,在美国布朗大学修读亚洲历史专业,继而去台湾学习中文,贾佩琳与中国的缘分就此开始。贾佩琳女士已从事多年中文电影的英文字幕翻译工作。她翻译过的电影包括：张艺谋的《活着》(To Live)和《英雄》(Hero)、侯孝贤的《悲情城市》(City of Sadness)、陈凯歌的《霸王别姬》(Farewell My Concubine)和《梅兰芳》（Forever Enthralled)等、 田壮壮的《小城之春》（Springtime in a Small Town）、 姜文的《鬼子来了》（Devils on the Doorstep)和《阳光灿烂的日子》（In the Heat of the Sun）、王家卫的《一代宗师》（The Grandmaster）等众多知名影片。她仿佛是中国电影发展的见证者，为把中国电影推向世界做出了巨大的贡献。
