讲座题目: Chinese Adverbials, Interrupted Scopes and the Nature of Minimality in Non-Movement Dependencies
讲座时间:3月3日(周五)上午10:00-11:30
讲座地点:紫金港东5-201
Abstract:
The work reported in this talk studies a novel phenomenon in Chinese: An adjectivalconstituent sitting in the complement position of the matrix verb call it X is usuallyinterpreted as modifying the matrix verb and projects a corresponding scope which is subject tominimality. The pattern is schematically shown below:(1) … [Y … (*adv) … V-de X]where V is the matrix verb, -de is a semantically obscure bound morpheme that helps introduceX as the structural complement of V, and Y marks the scope of X. Our goal is two-fold: to report and look closely into somekey facts about (1) for the first time in the literature, and to show that the phenomenon is mostadequately explained with the probe-goal theory (Chomsky 2000, 2001; alsosee Pesetsky and Torrego 2007, Wurmbrand 2012 among others).
