Shikoku University of Japan Took a Friendly Seminar with
the Institute of Japanese Language & Culture, SIS.

On March 19, 2010, a seminar with Shikoku University, operated jointly by Arts Department of School of
Humanities and SIS, was held in East No. 6 Room 319. Prof. Shiroi Kou from Shikoku University along with his five
postgraduates had conversations with students from Institute of Japanese Language & Culture (IJLC).
The seminar was not only popular among students from Japanese and Chinese major, but also won acclaim of
some students who major in science and technology. The seminar was hosted by lecturer Alita from IJLC. During
the seminar, Prof. Shiroi gave a lecture entitled “Japanese Haiku (a kind of short Japanese poem consisting
of seventeen characters) and China—the rise of Takarai Kikaku (the disciple of Basyou, famous Haiku writer)”
which mainly focused on the introduction of Japanese Haiku and its relationship with Chinese poem. Moreover,
students from both Japan and China talked about interesting topics like culture, life, etc.
It opens without doubt that this seminar will not only help students to understand Japanese Haiku, but also
enhance the mutual understanding between Japan and China.
