Delegation of Zhejiang University Returned with Honors from Asian International Model United Nations, Peking University

From March 12 to March 15, a delegation of six from Zhejiang University took part in the Asian International
Model United Nations (AIMUN) held at Peking University. They were highly praised by the host university
and other universities for their outstanding performances and two students, Wang Lechen and Tang
Mengxue, who were on behalf of France in the History Security Council, won the Best Position Paper
Award.

 

AIMUN follows the modes of the United Nations (UN) and carries out simulated activities such as the
delivery of speeches on given topics, debates and votings. More than 400 students from over 40 different
universities took part in AIMUN on behalf of more than 100 countries. The committees set up this
year included UN Security Council, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization,
United Nations Environmental Programme, United Nations Children's Fund, United Nations World Tourism
Organization, Ambassador Project, Non-governmental organizations, UN History Security Council, Asian
Development Bank and so on; Issues discussed included energy crisis, anti-global terrorism, situation in
Iran, environmental protection and sustainable development as well as issues with distinct regional
characteristics such as protection of aboriginal culture and protection of intellectual property rights in Asia-
Pacific region.

 

On the evening before the commencement of the conference, the Model United Nations (MUN) Association
of Peking University held the summit of MUN leaders, to which Wang Lechen,
secretary-general of MUN
Association of Zhejiang University and Cai Yuanyuan, the deputy secretary-general were also invited. As
delegate of one of the nine universities that has been asked to deliver a speech, Wang Lechen made
an excellent speech on the recruitment, training and assessment of MUN stuff, which was spoken highly
of by the people in charge from different universities and had established a sound reputation for MUN
activities in Zhejiang University.

 

During the conference, dressed in suits, all delegates of our university behaved like sophisticated
diplomats in their committees. They actively lobbied around, strived for international dialogue and
cooperation through negotiation and consultation, vividly played the role of the corresponding countries
and effectively promoted the progress of the conference. Zeng Yuze, the French ambassador in the
Ambassador Project, together with ambassadors from other committees, coordinated with each
other, unified positions and successfully constructed the communication link between developed
countries and developing countries, all of which had made an active contribution to the smooth progress
of the conference; In the History Security Committee, the French delegate Wang Lechen and Tang
Mengxue had fully displayed their leadership in the European Union by actively leading the European
countries to mediate with the United States-led NATO, which also actively promoted the process
of the conference; In the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, French
delegate Cai Yuanyuan and Nepal delegate Wang Tianqi joined the group of countries from
European Union, and finally facilitated the cooperation between the US-led developed countries and
China-led developing countries through negotiation and
consultation. Because of this, they also contributed
to the combination of two draft resolutions which had been approved by absolute majority. In the United
Nations Environment Programme, for the sake of the development of small countries, Nepal delegate
Shao Lingwei also actively mediated and negotiated with big countries. The delegation of Zhejiang
University has won unanimously praise for their outstanding performances.

 

At the interval of the conference, our delegates also publicized the organization and progress of MUN in
Zhejiang University and kindly invited relevant universities to take part in the 2nd Zhejiang University Pan-
Yangtze River Delta region MUN, which immediately received active responses from other delegates.
