Looking East: William Howard Taft & the 1905 Mission to China

At 7:30 P.M. on Oct.24, the unveiling ceremony of "Looking East: William Howard Taft & the 1905 Mission to China"--- Exhibition of the Photographs of Harry Fowler Woods was held on Zijingang
campus. The ceremony was hosted by Deputy Dean of SIS Prof. Yin Qiping. Deputy Dean of Institute
of Social Science Prof. Chu Chaofu
, poet Margo Steve and Acting Dean of SIS Prof. Fan Jieping
attended the ceremony and delivered gratitude speeches. The exhibition had a total of up to 303 old
photos provided by Ms
. Margo Taft Stever and her son.

 

 

The photos were taken by Harry Fowler Woods during his stay in China last century. This is the first
show of the photos in China after a long-term journey from place to place. They have recorded the
images of Hong Kong, Beijing, Forbidden City, Shanghai and the Great Wall in westerners’ eyes,
emphasizing the significance of vessels and the power of navy. Besides, Chinese customs like those
about funeral and prison have also been recorded.

 

 

The exhibition is to last from Oct.24 to the first ten days of November. After the exhibition, H. F. Woods Camp Trust will present these copies to SIS, ZJU.
