The Second Conference on Contemporary Chinese Discourse Studies Was Held in Zhejiang University

On Dec. 19, 2008, the Second Conference on Contemporary Chinese Discourse Studies was held at
the Zijin Hall, Zijingang Hotel, initiated and hosted by Center for Contemporary Chinese Discourse Studies
(CCCDS) of Zhejiang University (ZJU). The conference was chaired by Prof. Shi Xu, Director of CCCDS,
Prof. Luo Weidong, Assistant of the President of ZJU, and Prof. Fan Jieping, Dean of School of
International Studies (SIS) of ZJU gave the welcome speech and opening speech on behalf of ZJU
and SIS respectively.

It is reported that this conference attracted about 80 famous experts and young scholars of discourse
studies in the country, where they discussed new thoughts and paradigms of China’s discourse studies
and investigated the progress of discourse research on hot spot issues in China. On the opening day,
Dec. 19, 10 experts in this realm, including Prof. Shi Xu from Zhejiang University, Prof. Cao Shunqing
from Sichuan University, Prof. Wang Ning from Tsinghua University, Prof. Chi Changhai from Zhejiang
University and Prof. Liu Yameng from Fujian Normal University, presented their research achievements
to all representatives attending the conference and had a warm discussion about the questions proposed
by the latter.

Following the schedule of this conference, over 10 specialists including Prof. Gu Yueguo from Beijing
Foreign Studies University, Prof. Wu Dongying from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Wu Zongjie
from Zhejiang University gave speeches on Dec. 20. On the morning of the Dec. 21, the conference also
held a tea party on discourse studies at which more than 40 young scholars participated.
