Commissioned by the Newspaper Journal Publishing Management Division of the General Administration of Press and Publication, the Institute of Media for Foreign Language Teaching of Zhejiang University,
together with the Education and Training Center of the General Administration of Press and Publication
and the China’s Foreign Language Teaching Journal Quality Inspection Center ,hosted the Phase
1 English Edition Journal Editing Training Course which successfully concluded on Apr.19th in Beijing.
The English Edition Journal Editing Training Course is designed on the basis of the results of the random
checks of the publishing qualities of 148 English edition academic journals. The random check was
conducted by the institute commissioned by the Newspaper Journal Publishing Management Division
of the General Administration of Press and Publication. The whole training course is divided into two
phases. Phase 1 was held in Beijing from Apr.13th 2008 to Apr.19th. Mr. Zhang Zeqing, deputy director
of the Newspaper Journal Division of the General Administration of Press and Publication and
Mr. Duan Jike, director of the China’s Foreign Language Teaching Journal Quality Inspection Center took
part in the course-opening ceremony during which Prof. Jian Qingmin, director of the institute and director
of the China’s Foreign Language Teaching Journal Quality Inspection Center, made a comprehensive
review of the status quo of the editing qualities of the English edition academic journals in China and
pointed out the existing major problems. Prof. Lu Jianping, Prof. Yuan Jing and Prof. Pan Xunyi from
SIS lectured in Beijing, classifying and explaining the main mistakes still existing in the English edition
academic journals. Those more than 70 participants of the course are all chief or executive editors of
English edition academic journals. Editors of excellent journals such as Prof. Wu Yuzhang, deputy editor-
in-chief of the China Social Science and Prof. Chen He, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Tsinghua
University were invited to introduce experience during the course. The students generally reflected that
the arrangement of the course was obviously targeted, the teachers’ explanation was both clear and
inspiring and expected effects had been achieved in the training.
According to the arrangement of Newspaper Journal Publishing Management Division of the General
Administration of Press and Publication, the Phase 2 English Edition Journal Editing Training Course
will move to Hangzhou and will be hosted from May 24 to May29 in Zhejiang University.
