It is at the beginning of the new term that
School of International Studies (SIS) received a thank-you letter from the capital city,
expressing gratitude to Yang Wei, president of
leaders of SIS for supporting the volunteer service to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The letter
highly appraises the special volunteer team of SIS that they have done an excellent job in serving
for the Olympics and made due contribution to this great centennial event of
During the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, SIS of
team of 41 students to Beijing Continental Grand Hotel, the contract hotel of The Beijing Organizing
Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and one of the stays for foreign journalists,
undertaking the reception services as Olympic volunteers. During the Olympic Games, students
from
counseling and reception with the idea of serving for Olympic, making contribution to their motherland
and carrying forward the 100-year-tradition of
spirit of “participation, devotion, delight”, they won a reputation from journalists from various countries
with excellent comprehensive quality, outstanding professional ability and an attitude of
diligence and selfless dedication. The volunteers have made great efforts and contribution to
the reception services in Beijing Continental Grand Hotel and
From July 16 to Aug. 24, 2008, the SIS volunteer team, with their language vantage, served as a
bridge for communication between the hotel and foreign guests, and even between Chinese and
all foreigners. As one of the contract hotels for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and a Class-B
hotel for media, the major task of Beijing Continental Grand Hotel is to prepare reception for
foreign registered journalists, which makes it especially important to communicate effectively and
solve problems so as to ensure a successful reception. For the purpose of ordered service, the hotel
divided the volunteers into several groups after training and mobilizing meetings according to
language need and personal comprehensive quality, etc. They were assigned to the hotel’s core
departments like security department, food and beverage department, convention department,
room service department and command center. Apart from the roles of security guard, operator,
waiter and assistant manager, volunteers have been keeping in mind real awareness of self-
devotion and the precious Olympic spirit of service, helping others with all they can, anytime and
anywhere during the Games. What this marvelous social practice in the summer vacation has
brought to the volunteers is not just a sense of achievement, but also an opportunity to know a
company’s management model. During their work, the 41 volunteers have either seen or directly
participated in various security and management processes, as well as establishing
varieties of research projects based on their own experiences as a starting point and completing
related reports.
Serving the Olympics and showing talent – congratulations to the SIS volunteer team for Beijing
2008 Olympic Games, they have shown the high-spirited demeanor of students from SIS,
