Excellent Students from SIS Devoted to the Olympics as Special Volunteers for Foreign Journalists During Beijing Olympic Games

June 12, the second round interview of special volunteers for foreign journalist during the Beijing
Olympic Games took place in School of International Studies (SIS) of Zhejiang University at Zijingang
Campus. Ms. Liu Xiaojing, chief of the general manager’s office of Beijing Continental Grand Hotel
(Beijing International Convention Center) which is the hotel for foreign journalists during the Beijing
Olympic Games, Mr. Xu Jianxin, director of Political Working Office, and Ms. Yi Lei, director of Training
Department came from Beijing to interview the students from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. They are
going to choose about 30 out of the 50 candidates, who will be responsible for the language translation
and supporting volunteer service in Beijing Continental Grand Hotel for the 2008 Olympic Games and
Special Olympic Games for the Disabled.

The volunteer recruit this time attracted 213 under graduates and graduate students from
English, French, Germany, Japanese and Russian majors, from which 50 were chosen in the
second round interview. A total number of 30 students, including 22 English majors, 6 Japanese and
2 French, would join the Beijing Olympic volunteer team at last. Their working post will be arranged
in the area of front
line service, covering office areas, lobbies, custom service centers, dining halls, business centers
and security inspection places, etc.

“How should you response when foreign journalists talk about some sensitive topics with you?”
“Serving as a volunteer is not an easy job, have you been ready for the difficulties you’re supposed
to confront in Beijing?” Different from the first round, students were required to answer the
questions in Chinese during the entire process of the interview, in order to examine the attitude
towards serving others and devotion, reaction, affinity, expression ability and relevant experiences.
All interviewees were very confident about themselves and sufficiently expressed their wish and
passion for being an Olympic volunteer, as well as showing impressive demeanors. Interviewers spoke
highly of the candidates after the interview and they expressed to SIS the idea of increasing the
candidate number on the basis of current situation, after the agreement of superior officers.
