SIS Holds the Exhibition of German Language and Culture “Deutschland and China” for Sino-German Culture Year

With the melody of Symphony No.14 (Mozart), the opening ceremony of the Exhibition of German
Language and Culture with a theme of “Greeting from Germany” began in the exhibition hall of the
students’ center on Zijingang Campus, Zhejiang University (ZJU), at 2:00 p.m., June 16,2008.

The initiator of German Center of Zhejiang University(predecessor of the present Institute of German
Studies),Lu Yongxiang, who is VIce-chairman of NPC Standing Committee, president of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences and former president of Zhejiang University, sent a congratulatory letter to
the exhibition. In his letter, Prof. Lu highly praised this exhibition and the ZJU Academy and Culture
Festival, expressing his sincerest hope and best wishes for the vigorous development of the Institute
of German Studies. Pro.Pang Xueshuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party
Committee of ZJU, Mrs. Geissel,
Cultural Consul of German Consulate General, Prof. Fan Jieping, acting dean of SIS and some other
leaders were present at the ceremony and gave speeches respectively. The ceremony, presided by
the assistant director of the Institute of German Studies, Associate Professor Li Yuan, attracted many
scholars and students from ZJU and other universities and middle schools all over Zhejiang Province.

This exhibition is a major part of the event of “Deutschland and China” for Sino-German Culture Year.
With German President Koehler and Chinese President Hu Jintao as its co-guardians, “Deutschland
and China” is an activity co-sponsored by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, German Asia-Pacific
Economic  Commission and Goethe Institute, co-organized by the German Consulate General in
Shanghai and Goethe Institute and hosted by Institute of German Studies, SIS, ZJU.

After having travelled to four cities, the exhibition reached its last stop—Hangzhou. The exhibition was
lively and visitors could learn in amusement. It showed the visitors not only the outlook of German culture
and the glamour of Germany, but the crystallization of the development of technology and culture today
through its design, conception, methods of expression and technics. Visitors could learn the history of
German as a tool for human communication from aspects like the structure of language system and
poetic language. There were also some refreshing episodes about Germany and German.
