May 5, 2009, on the invitation of the Institute of Foreign Language Teaching, Doctor You Xiaoye, from the English Faculty of Pennsylvania State University in US, addressed an academic lecture entitled “Rhetorical Strategies, Context, and China English” in School of International Studies of Zhejiang University. Doctor You expressed his unique viewpoints on the spiral & iterative or inductive methods of proof used in Chinese traditional argumentative prose, which was established by Professor Robert Kaplan. He has studied rhetoric and writing in Chinese pattern, adopting both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Then Doctor You pointed out that universities should understand and appreciate those different rhetorical strategies in distinguished context of words, and encourage their creativity in English rhetoric and writing. After the wonderful lecture, teachers and students from SIS, ZJU discussed with Doctor You some questions related to his lecture. Every one present found the lecture brilliant and agreed that his studies and thoughts are of great reference value for further studies on rhetoric and writing. (Translated by He Chen)
