On June 22, 2009, Dr. Elmar. Engels from the Institute of Comparative Literature of Technical University of Berlin, donated a great number of precious books to the Institute of Germany Studies of ZJU. Among them are 40 volumes of Almanacs of the Society of Schiller Study (from 1969 to 2009), 42 volumes of Almanacs of the Society of Jean Paul Study (from 1967 to 2009) together with the Archives of German study
(bimonthly) and several other precious documents. The Almanacs of the Society of Schiller Study and the
Almanacs of the Society of Jean Paul Study contain almost all of the studies on the two writers in the past
50 years. And the Archives of German Study serves both as an important political journals of post—Berlin
Wall
Dr. Engels has been a member of ZJU Institute of German Studies which was started by ex-president, Mr.
Lu Yongxiang and under the support of Technical University of Berlin since 1985. He was frequently
received by Mr. Lu and Mr. Han Zhenxiang during the process. Besides, Dr. Engels used to teach in
ZJU for a long time was the teacher of scholars and young teachers who later flew to
further researches or doctoral dtudy. His students and colleagues gave him a nickname “Lao En”
to show their love for him. Over the past 2 decades, he has been making great efforts to provide
help for exchange students, graduate students and visiting scholars of ZJU during their stay in
encouraging them to participate in many activities like concerts, operas and shows in
has also donated a number of books to Institute of German Studies of ZJU in recent years. He has made
a great contribution to ZJU’s German study and the improvement of German language discipline.
