In August, 2010, School of International Studies (SIS), ZJU, jointly held the first “Summer Linguistics Class” with Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL), City University of Hongkong (CityU). Prof. Jonathan Webster, Prof. Pan Haihua, Dr. Alex Fang and Dr. Paul Law, those famous scholars from CityU provided a series of excellent linguistics courses for the teachers and postgraduates from various universities of Zhejiang province.
The first “Summer Linguistics Class” started on August 2nd in Zijingang campus. Prof. He Lianzhen, dean of SIS, and Prof. Jonathan Webster, dean of the CTL, attended the opening ceremony and spoke.
Prof. He welcomed more than 70 students who participated in this summer class and she pointed out that this joint class held by SIS and CTL was targeted at improving the level of linguistic research in mainland, and enhancing the communication among young teachers and postgraduates who are interested in linguistic studies all over Zhejiang, even across the country. Prof. He also emphasized that all the teachers invited to give lectures are excellent scholars in Hongkong, regarded as “all-star cast”. She hoped that the participants would make full use of this valuable opportunity.
This summer class lasted for one month, having four basic linguistic courses as “Semantics”, ”Functional Grammar”, “ Corpus Linguistics”, and “Syntax and Morphology”. During the month, promising teachers and postgraduates from 25 different colleges gathered in SIS, taking lectures and discussing advanced academic issues in linguistics. The four learned professors from CityU even conducted eight seminars by using their spare time. Through sharing their research results, the professors encouraged participants to specialize in their interests and do the research in depth. Participants were deeply impressed by these four dedicated professors.
