National Academic Conference on Non-English-Major Graduate Education Was Successfully Held

The board conference of National Academic Conference on Non-English-Major Graduate Education, co-organized by the
National Academic Research Committee of College Graduates’ Foreign Language Teaching, the Higher Education Press and
the Graduate School of Zhejiang University, was held successfully during from December 19 to 21, 2007.

The conference was hosted by Prof. He Lianzhen, the chairperson of the committee and Deputy Dean of SIS. About 60 experts and scholars from Peking University, Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Nanjing
University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University attended the conference. Present at the conference were Prof. Lai Maode, Vice
President of Zhejiang University, Prof. Yan Jianhua, Dean of the Graduate School of Zhejiang University, Prof. Chen Weizhe,
Prof. Fan Jieping, Acting Dean of SIS, and Mr. Jia Wei, President of Higher Education Press attached to Foreign Language
Press of Higher Education Press Group, and all the experts expressed their supports and congratulations to the conference.

Prof. Zhang Wenzhi from Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences gave a report on the preparations for the
compilation of “The Fundamental Criteria for English Teaching of Non-English-Major Graduates of Master/Doctor Degree” and
made a detailed explanation to some particular targets among these criteria. Representatives attending the conference
proceeded a thorough discussion on the fundamental criteria and raised numerous valuable opinions based on the reality of their universities to improve the new ones.

Representatives listened to a report on the reforms of public English teaching for postgraduates in Zhejiang University and were shown around the examination and interview scene of Public English. They presented great interest in the reforms and spoke
highly of the creativity of Zhejiang University.

The conference has reached the expectation and turned out a success. It has advanced the reforms of English teaching of non-English-major graduates in a national scale, while promoting the communication and cooperation among different universities
and colleges in graduates’ Public English teaching.
