World-Famous Scholars Talk to SIS Teachers and Students Face to Face

June 30, 2006, SIS

June 28th, on the invitation of School of International Studies, three world-renowned Canadian scholars, Prof. Pamila McCallum, Prof. Evelyn Cobley, and Dr. Xie Shaobo,  gave splendid academic lectures in School of International Studies, Zhejiang University, which attracted teachers, doctoral students and postgraduates from the college.

Prof. Pamila McCallum is the last student of Prof. Raymend Williams, and the chief editor of ARIEL. She knows well of British Literature and critical theory and this lecture is a comparison between Derrida’s Specters of Marx and Williams’ Modern Tragedy. Prof. Evelyn Cobley is a professor of the English Department of Victoria University and an editor of Comment On Canadian Comparative Literature, who has made a deep research into British Literature and Canadian Literature. Her lecture focused on the influences the mechanical civilization had brought to human beings. Dr. Xie Shaobo, once a teacher in Hunan Normal University, stayed there as a professor and subeditor of ARIEL after he got his doctor’s degree in Canada. His special identity made him especially interested in the post colonial criticism and he discussed in his lecture about the relations between translation and the shaping of China’s modernization.

The three lectures brought to the audience great interests and evoked an extensive and heated discussion on the following topics: Is the 21st century the century of China? In what sense is it the century of China? How to form critical discourse with Chinese characteristics under the global language environment? The atmosphere was lively throughout the discussion, with all the questions put forward by both the teachers and students and face-to-face exchanges between the speakers and the audience. And they said, “we all enjoyed this grand banquet of knowledge and learnt a lot from it.
