Expert in Sartre Research Gives a Lecture in SIS
October 26, 2006, SIS

October 24, 2006, an academic lecture on Sartre research, which had been expected for long, was given in School of International Study. The lecturer Mrs. Madeleine Gobeil-Noël had been in charge of the Art and Literature Section of UNESCO. She had taught French literature in Canada universities and worked chronically in Canada National Radio and TV Station. This visit to Zhejiang University is one part of her world lecture tour on “Sartre-Beauvoir Double Statuary”. Her brief and lively foreword left an indelible impression on the teachers and students. This French literature expert who had over 30 years’ friendship with Sartre and Beauvoir, showed us the film she made in 1967, offering a chance to learn about Sartre’s housing condition, working habits and his relationship with Beauvoir,  letting us see the scene of Sartre’s mother, Sartre and his adopted daughter playing piano, as well as the attitudes they published about many important social affairs and literary questions such as refusing the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Vietnam issue, Lu Sayre Court and so on.

We were able to copy those precious scenes under the kind support of the teachers from the college lab. Dozens of French language enthusiasts present at the lecture, from School of International Studies, the French Association and other colleges, watched the film with great interest and put forward a lot of questions. The whole lecture went in a cordial atmosphere.
